We apologise for the short notice but unfortunately soloist Rebecca Bottone has been taken ill and is unable to perform Richard Ayres’ ‘In The Alps’. Due to the extremely specialist nature of the role in that piece it has not been possible to replace Ms Bottone and we have therefore had to alter Friday’s programme.
Northern Sinfonia and Northern Sinfonia Chorus will still perform David Lang’s ‘Statement to the Court’ and the remainder of the programme will be focused on the music of America with an exciting, special performance of Bernstein’s ‘West Side Story: Symphonic Dances’. This new arrangement was commissioned by conductor Nicholas Collon’s own Aurora Orchestra with kind permission of the Bernstein Estate and was completed by Aurora Orchestra’s Arranger-In-Residence, Iain Farrington. The programme is completed with Igor Stravinsky’s ‘Dumbarton Oaks’, written for the estate of that name in Washington DC, and young American Composer Nico Muhly’s ‘Motion’ for String Quartet, Piano and Clarinet.
David Lang – The Sage Gateshead’s Composer in Association – has set to music a famous political speech from 1918 by the American socialist Eugene Debs. A UK premiere. David Lang has written a blog for us on how and why he came to write ‘Statement to the Court’.
